Career Highlights

  • Columbus Citizen Journal All-City League first team as a 6’3” forward from the Central High School Pirates basketball team in 1955.
  • While at Central, Buddy was a scholar as well as a three-sport athlete and continued his academic/athletic endeavors at Bowling Green State University.
  • At Bowling Green, he was captain of the undefeated freshman basketball team.
  • As a junior, he was selected second team All Mid-American Conference and as a senior he was voted varsity team captain of BGSU’s MAC championship team and selected to first team All-MAC basketball team.
  • After college, Chuck enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served two years deployed to the Vietnam War, earning a Bronze Star and he continued his involvement in basketball and was selected to the All-Army Basketball Team in 1961.
  • McCampbell retired from the U.S. Army in 1980 at the rank of Major after serving for 20 years.
  • In Bradenton, Florida he coached boys and girls youth basketball and serves as a board member of the Team Success Charter School.

Career Highlights


  • Frank graduated from Columbus East High School in 1955 where he was a standout player for the Tigers in 1953, 54 and 55.
  • He went on to play basketball at Bowling Green State University in 1956, 57, 58 and 59.
  • While playing with the BG Falcons, he was rewarded for his excellence on the basketball court by being selected to the All-MAC (Mid-American Conference) Basketball Team.
  • Frank continued in the sport and played professionally in the NABL (North American Basketball League).

Career Highlights

  • Sophomore on Linden McKinley High School’s 1956 varsity boys’ basketball team. 
  • Jim led the Panthers in scoring and rebounding as a sophomore, junior, and as a senior, and was an All-City selection all three of those years.
  • At 6’3” he was the team’s tallest player which made it necessary for him to play the center position Bowman played as a freshman at Wittenberg University.

Career Highlights

  •  He was first named to the All City basketball team for the 1954- 55 season while playing at West High School, in which he averaged just over 17 points a game, and again as a senior when he averaged 23.7 points per game.
  • At West, Dick also played football and ran track where he was a two time City Champ in the high jump and State champion for the high jump in 1955.
  • The Ohio State University where he lettered in both basketball and track for three years (Freshmen were not eligible).
  • He was a starter his junior year where he averaged 11.5 points a game and 10.7 rebounds a game.
  • In 1960, Dick received The Big Ten Medal of Honor as the outstanding senior athletic scholar.
  • Outstanding rebounder and is still in 8th place for the most rebounds in a single game for OSU with 24 at Wisconsin.

  • Played forward/center for the East High School-Tigers, in his junior year led the team to a 26-1 record, and a #1 state ranking.
  • Joe went on to play basketball for the Ohio State Buckeyes where he was a co-captain on the 25-3 NCAA National Championship team.
  • He had a stint in semi-professional basketball as a player/coach with the Columbus Comets, advancing to runner-up in the league finals.
  • Joe was the 21st overall player chosen in the 1960 NBA draft by the Syracuse Nationals.

Career Highlights


  • Herman earned Certificates of Meritorious Award in each of his last two years (1956 and 1957) for his contributions in varsity baseball and varsity basketball.
  • Herman at Central High School is where his varsity basketball exploits for the Pirates garnered more Certificates of Meritorious Awards in 1958, 1959 and 1960.
  • Herman's 1960 senior year accomplishments included: 1st Team All-City; Associated Press Class AA All Ohio High School Basketballers Award, Honorable Mention; United Press International All Ohio Cagers, Honorable Mention.
  • Nicknamed the “Big Bopper”, the 6’2” forward/center was known for his leaping ability and was known as a early day “trash talker” that backed up his rhetoric with hustle and a devastating hook-shot.
  • Herman played in and earned numerous awards with a number of AAU and Industrial League teams.
  • He logged seven years playing semi-professional basketball, playing in nine gold medal tournaments of which he was selected Tournament MVP three times.

Career Highlights

  • Jim graduated from Columbus North High School in 1959 where he played as a center/forward and earned All-City honors all 3 years of varsity basketball.
  • His sophomore and junior years saw North amass a lofty 50-3 record.
  • As a senior, Jim was co-captain of the Polar Bears and was named to the 2nd team Associated Press (AP) Ohio All-AA team.
  • Doughty played for Ohio State where he returned to graduate in 1970.
  • He played semi-pro basketball with the Columbus Comets and played professionally with the Harlem Globetrotters in 1963 and 1964.

Career Highlights

  • Dean graduated from Eastmoor High School in 1962 where he played basketball for Coach Bill Courtney.
  • As a forward/guard he earned All-City honors as a Sophomore, Junior, and Senior. 
  • During his Senior year he was the City League scoring leader, led the Warriors to the City League championship with a 16-1 record.
  • Named All-City 1st team, and named to the UPI All-Ohio 2nd team and the AP 3rd team.
  • Played at the University of Cincinnati and as a freshman, played for the 16-0 Bearcats.
  • He played as a sophomore and started as a junior and as a senior the team advanced to the NCAA’s Elite Eight. In 1970,
  • Dean played on a US team in Greece that went 17-1 in international competition.
  • Since graduation from UC, Dean has been awarded the Elis Island Medal of Honor and has earned a MBA Degree from Xavier University.

Career Highlights


  • Coached by Vince Chickerella, Tony only played for the Panthers for two years, he managed to be the team’s leading scorer in 1962 and in that same year, earned All League honors as well as honorable mention for All American honors, and was mentioned in the All American Sports Magazine that year.
  • Tony had the ability to play all five positions and had done just that during his career at Linden.
  • Tony played in the City of Columbus Industrial League and was the star player for his team, sponsored by Marzetti, and was selected as team MVP and leading scorer.
  • Tony also played some semi-professional basketball for Berry A.C. and was again, his team’s leading scorer which earned him a spot on the league’s All Star Team.

1967

Career Highlights

  • Jim graduated from Linden McKinley High School in 1967 where as team captain, he led the Panthers to their first OHSAA State Championship.
  • He played collegiately at The Ohio State University garnering All-Big10 honors and was a team captain.
  • Drafted in the NBA’s 1st round (13th pick) by Los Angeles, Cleamons’ pro career as a player spanned 9 years with the Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks and Washington Bullets.
  • Jim was selected to the NBA All-Defensive Team (2nd team) in 1976.
  • Assistant coach at Furman University, head coach at Youngstown State University
  • Head coach for the Dallas Mavericks and assistant coach with Chicago Bulls, LA Lakers and New Orleans Hornets.
  • Jim has had much success in the NBA earning a championship ring as a player with the Lakers and multiple rings as assistant coach with the Bulls.

Career Highlights

  • Dwight (Bo) Lamar was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio and graduated from Columbus East High School where he led the Tigers to a state championship in 1968
  • University of Southwestern Louisiana, now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
  • Three-time collegiate All-American between 1969- 1973.
  • During his college career he averaged 31.2 points a game, a point total of 3,493 points, which remains among the top ranks of NCAA basketball records.
  • He is known for his extremely high long-range shot that some coaches’ say dusted the rafters.
  • Lamar was a third-round pick by the Detroit Pistons in the 1973 NBA Draft.
  • Played for three American Basketball Association teams: the San Diego Conquistadors from 1974–1975, then the Indiana Pacers and San Diego Sails in 1976, before moving to the NBA.
  • In 1977 he played for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Career Highlights


  • William Edward “Easy Ed” Ratleff attended Columbus East High School in Columbus, Ohio, leading his team to the AAA (big school) state championship in 1968 with a 25-0 record.
  • Overall in three seasons he led the Tigers to three state championship games, two state championships and a dominant 70-1 record.
  • In 2009, Ratleff was inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame.
  • A 6’6” guard/forward, he played college basketball at California State University, Long Beach under coach Jerry Tarkanian. He still holds the school’s career record for scoring average (21.4).
  • William was twice named first-team AP All-American, in 1971-72 and 1972-73.
  • In 1991 his number 42 was retired by Long Beach State.
  • Ratleff played for the United States national basketball team at the 1972 Summer Olympics, where the US lost a controversial gold medal game to the Soviet Union. Ratleff and his teammates earned silver medals, which they refused to accept.
  • Throughout the Olympic tournament, Ratleff averaged 6.4 points per game.
  • Ratleff was chosen with the sixth pick in the 1973 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets.
  • Ratleff played five season for the Rockets, with career NBA statistics logged as: Points: 2,813 (8.3 ppg), Rebounds: 1,363 (4.0 rpg), Assists: 896 (2.7 apg).

1971

BRAD HOFFMAN

 

Career Highlights


  • Brad is a 1971 graduate of Walnut Ridge High School. He first gained reputation as a sharp-shooter at Roosevelt Junior High School where he was coached by fellow inductee Miller Barnes Jr.
  • Brad’s reputation as “The Blonde Bomber” blossomed as a junior on a star-studded Columbus South varsity basketball team coached by Dick Ricketts.
  • Brad transferred to a already loaded Walnut Ridge team coached by Jackie Moore, which immediately put a lock on the state championship for the Scots, undefeated season and the big school state title in 1971.
  • Brad also earned a spot on the all-tournament team and averaged better than 20 points per game.
  • Hoffman, a 5’10 guard, played collegiately for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels from 1972-75, coached by Dean Smith. He played sparingly for his first two years, then became a regular rotation player for his senior season.
  • After graduating from UNC, Hoffman played basketball for Athletes in Action (AIA), a faith-based sports organization.
  • In 1978, Hoffman represented the United States in the 1978 FIBA World Championships in Manila due to the timing of the tournament ruling out the participation of active college players. The U.S. finished fifth in the games with a 6-4 record. Hoffman finished fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 11.7 points per game in the ten tournament contests.

1974

Career Highlights


  • Larry Jones played professionally in the NBA and ABA, from 1964 to 1974.
  • A 6’3” guard from the University of Toledo, Jones started and ended his career with the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers, who drafted him in 1964.
  • Jones would have his best years in the rival ABA, playing for the Denver Rockets, The Floridians, the Dallas Chaparrals, and the Utah Stars from 1967 to 1973.
  • A high-scoring jump shooter, he averaged at least 22 points per game during each of his first four seasons in the league.
  • During one stretch with the Rockets in 1968, he scored at least 30 points in 23 consecutive games.
  • Larry was also named to four ABA All-Star teams, and he was the first president of the ABA Player’s Association.
  • Jones had tallied 10,505 combined NBA/ABA career points.

1977

HERB WILLIAMS

 

Career Highlights


  • The 6’10” Herb Williams was a dominant high school basketball player at Marion-Franklin (Columbus, Ohio) where in his senior year, lead the state ranked Red Devils to the tournament regional final before bowing out to the eventual state champion in 1977.
  • He was the crown jewel of the Ohio State recruits in 1977. Williams was a four-year starter for the Ohio State Buckeyes, scoring 2,011 points (then a team record) and pulling down 1,111 rebounds (still second in team history only to Jerry Lucas).
  • Williams is the school leader in career field goals made, with 834 in 114 games. He is second all-time in career blocked shots with 328.
  • Williams was named to the All-Big Ten team as a junior, while at Ohio State he finished the year with a 21-8 record and advanced to the NCAA regionals. He led the Buckeyes in scoring that year with an average of 17.6 points per game.
  • Williams was a team co-captain in both his junior and senior years at Ohio State.
  • Williams was a first-round draft choice of the Indiana Pacers in 1981, where he played from 1982 to 1989 and had his most productive years.
  • He was traded to the Dallas Mavericks after the 1988-1989 season.
  • In 1992, he was signed by the New York Knicks, where he spent seven years backing up perennial All-Star Patrick Ewing. Williams played one game (31 minutes) for the Toronto Raptors in 1996 before being waived and quickly returned to the Knicks.
  • The team made the 1994 and 1999 NBA Finals, with Williams serving as a team leader. After the 1999 Finals, Williams retired at the age of 41 after six regular season games and eight playoff games in 1999.
  • Four years later, he returned to the Knicks as an assistant coach. He worked under head coaches Don Chaney and Lenny Wilkens.  When Wilkens resigned in 2005, Williams took over as head coach.
  • In July 2005, Larry Brown was hired as the head coach of the Knicks, thus ending Williams’ head coaching tenure. Williams was the acting head coach of the Knicks for the final two games of the 2005-2006 season, when illness struck Larry Brown.
  • After that season Isiah Thomas replaced Brown as head coach. Williams worked as an assistant coach under Thomas, and continued to be in the coaching staff under Mike Woodson until Phil Jackson fired the entire staff in 2014. He has coached for the Knicks’ NBA Summer League team.
  • On March 26, 2015, Williams was hired as the assistant coach of the WNBA’s New York Liberty.

1982

TONI ROESCH

 

Career Highlights


  • Toni’s rise to basketball stardom began at Bishop Hartley High School from which she graduated in 1982 after amassing 1,623 career points as a point guard for the Lady Hawks.
  • She earned All-League Honors with a honorable mention as a freshman, following up with 1st team selections her three remaining years.
  • All-State Honors included: honorable mention (soph), 1st team (jr), 2nd team (sr).
  • Toni was selected to the All-American 5th team as a junior and led the Hawks to a 79-23 record over her career. She also led her team to State Runner-Up (‘79), State Semi-Finals (‘81), and Regional Finals (‘80 & ‘82).
  • Toni accepted a scholarship to Ohio State University’ and helped the Lady Buckeyes achieve four consecutive Big Ten titles.
  • Toni was team captain her senior year and claimed honors on the All Big Ten 2nd team along with the Dr. Brown Leadership Award.
  • After graduating from OSU, Toni had a short stint as assistant basketball coach at Stetson University (‘87), graduate assistant at OSU (‘87-’89), head women’s soccer and assistant women’s basketball (‘89-’92), head coach Bishop Hartley (‘92-’97).
  • She has been honored as Coach of the Year (‘93) Ohio Athletic Conference and District Coach of the Year (‘95 & ‘96).
  • Roesch was a television and radio color analyst for ESPN, Comcast and Fox (2000-2010), and has been a television and radio color analyst for WBNS and OHSAA since 1997.

1995

HELEN DARLING

 

Career Highlights

  • Brookhaven High School where she was an All-City and All-State basketball player and named a High School All-American by the WBCA.
  • WBCA High School All-America Game in 1995.
  • College career at Penn State, Darling averaged 10.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 2.49 steals in 126 games and is the only player in PSU history to amass 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 600 assists for her career.
  • Darling is also the only player in Penn State history to earn Big Ten Player of the Year honors.
  • A four-year starting point guard, she helped lead the Lady Lions to their first and only Final Four appearance in 2000.
  • Darling earned her degree in education from Penn State in December 2001.
  • She received the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award from the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association as the best senior player under 5’8” in 2000.
  • Darling played on the team presenting the USA at the 1999 World University Games held in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. The team earned the silver medal.
  • On April 25, 2000, Darling was drafted by the Cleveland Rockers in the second round (No.17 overall) of the 2000 WNBA Draft. In her rookie season, Darling played in all 32 regular season games and in six Rockers playoff games.
  • Helen played for: Cleveland Rockers (2000-2003), Minnesota Lynx (2004), Charlotte Sting (2005-2006), and San Antonio Silver Stars (2007-2010).
  • WNBA career, Darling has more than 1,000 career points, 650 assists and 250 career steals and has appeared in 19 career WNBA playoff games.

2003

JESSICA DAVENPORT

 

Career Highlights


  • Davenport played for Independence High School in Columbus, Ohio, where she was named a WBCA All-American.
  • Participated in the 2003 WBCA High School All-America Game where she scored eight points.
  • Davenport at 6’5” is noted for her blocking and rebounding ability, she guided Ohio State to a 29-3 season and a number 1 seed in the NCAA tournament in 2005.
  • Davenport was a member of the United States women’s national basketball team in 2005 and 2006, while at OSU, and in 2007 and 2008 while on the New York Liberty team.
  • Davenport was the third leading scorer on the 2005 World University Games Team in Izmir, Turkey. She helped the team to a 7-0 record, and a gold medal at the event.
  • Jessica joined the National team in 2006 for the 2006 Opals World Challenge. The team went 4-1.
  • Jessica was also part of the National team in 2007-08 that went 4-0 on the Tour of Italy and 2-0 at the Australia Exhibition.
  • Davenport was drafted second overall by the San Antonio Silver Stars in the 2007 WNBA Draft. Immediately thereafter, Davenport’s rights were traded to the New York Liberty along with the Silver Stars’ 2008 first round draft pick.
  • She developed a reputation as a consistent scorer and strong post presence. Jessica was later signed by the Indiana Fever.

Career Highlights

  • Played for Columbus East High School in Ohio
  • Conner’s Columbus East team lost just once in three years on their way to capturing two straight Class AAA state championships in 1968 and 1969.
  • Standing 6-6, Conner was known for his incredible leaping ability.
  • Noted Sugar Bowl Classic in New Orleans, Connor scored 17 points on 8-of-14 from the field, going up against Bill Walton.

Career Highlights

  • Marshae was considered one of the best undersized collegiate post players in the country, a strong force in the paint.
  • She was 2009 1st Team All-Southeastern Conference (coaches) and a 2nd Team selection by the media, voted 2007-08 1st Team All-SEC by the league’s coaches and a 2nd Team selection by the media.
  • Marshae was 2006-07 2nd Team All-SEC performer (coaches) and Associated Press All-SEC Honorable Mention team selection.
  • She was 2006 SEC All-Freshman Team and was UF’s leading rebounder each of her last three years while earning a spot on the 2007 and 2008 SEC Academic Honor Roll and 2006 SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll.
  • In UF’s CAREER record book, Dotson was No. 2 for field goal percentage (55.5%), No.10 scoring (1,529), No. 9 rebounds (854), No. 9 made field goals (598), No. 5 made free throws (333), No. 5 free throw attempted (499), No. 4 games played (126).

Career Highlights

  • Jerome “Jerry” Francis Sr. was a schoolboy legend at Columbus West HS 1964-66. For the Cowboys he lettered in baseball, basketball and cross-country all 3 years.
  • Jerry was the 1964 All-City 2nd Team basketball and 3rd Team baseball, 1965 All-City 1st Team basketball and baseball, and was All-State 1st Team basketball and baseball. Selected High School All-American 3rd Team basketball in 1965.
  • In 1966 he was 1st Team All-City and All-State as well as 1st Team All-American in basketball and baseball.
  • Jerry played in the 1966 Dapper Dan Classic held in Pittsburgh, PA then attended University of Dayton 1966-68 followed by a stint in the Army 1968-70 and afterwards attended Capital University 1970-72.

Career Highlights

  • Avery Godfrey played high school basketball at Columbus East where he was a vital cog in the accomplishments of the Tigers. He played from 1962 to 1963.
  • In his first year on the team, Avery garnered All-League, All-City, and All-State honors while under the tutiledge of coach Bob Hart. In 1963 East captured the State Championship.
  • Godfrey played basketball for Central State University and won the NAIA Championship in 1965.
  • Avery played semi-professional basketball with the Columbus Comets.
  • Avery was inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008.
  • Avery is currently owner of Godfrey Construction Company.

Career Highlights

  • Lorenda “Rene” Haynes played high school basketball as a guard for The Wellington School from 1999-2003. She was 1st Team All-District for 4 consecutive years and was selected District Player of the Year as a junior and senior.
  • Rene’s All-State honors: Special Mention - freshman, 2nd Team - sophomore, and 1st Team - junior and senior years.
  • Rene played guard for the Michigan State Spartans, earning a spot on the BigTen All-Freshman Team in 2004. Sophomore Year: 2005-2007 Team Captain, 2005 BigTen Champions, BigTen Tournament Champs, NCAA Final Four Runner-up, BigTen Honorable Mention, Junior Year: NCAA Sweet Sixteen, Played on the BigTen Foreign Tour Team, Senior Year:  2nd Team All-BigTen, All-BigTen Defensive Team, finished with 135 career games, the most in MSU history, member of the winningest senior class in school history with 103 wins.
  • Played professionally for: Pro Build –Lions (Netherlands), Lapperanta-Catz (Finland), FoA (Finland). Team Honors:  Finish League Champions – Catz 2009.
  • Rene was assistant coach at Florida State University and is now on the staff at Duke University, as assistant basketball coach.

Career Highlights

  • Fred Saunders burst on the Columbus basketball scene with exploits for the Mohawk HS Indians of the Columbus City League. He was every coaches’ match-up nightmare as he earned All-City honors.
  • Fred played for University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 1970; in his three years there, he averaged 6.5 points per game.
  • Saunders transferred to Syracuse University for his senior year. At Syracuse University, Saunders averaged 9.8 points per game as a power forward for the Orangemen. The Orangemen finished the season with a record of 17-9 and went on to the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship tournament.
  • At Syracuse, he acquired the nickname “Chocolate Thunder” due to his unique skyhook.
  • Saunders was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1974 National Basketball Association Draft (31st Overall) by the Phoenix Suns; he played power forward for the Phoenix Suns and the Boston Celtics during the 1970s.

Career Highlights

  • Ed Stahl, a 6’10” center for the Walnut Ridge of the Columbus City League, was a dominant figure in the Scots 1971 run for the Ohio AAA State Championship. Ed’s senior High School season ended with a 25-0 record to capture the title. Ed earned All-League and All-State honors in both his junior and senior years. As a senior, he was named Ohio’s AAA Player of the Year and he participated in the Dapper Dan Classic.
  • Stahl received a scholarship to play basketball at the University of North Carolina, in Chapel Hill where he was coached by the Hall of Fame coach Dean Smith.
  • He played professionally overseas in Venice, Italy, 1975-76 where as their leading scorer, finished 3rd in the country.
  • He played in Genoa, Italy in 1977-78.
  • Ed was the owner and operator of Shot Doctor Basketball, USA for nearly 30 years (1986-2015).

Career Highlights

  • In the 8th grade, Estaban was invited to the illustrious Nike Camp in Chicago, where only three 8th graders before him had been invited in the history of the camp.
  • Estaban entered high school as the #1 freshman in the country, he first played with the Bishop Hartley Hawks and then the Independence 76ers, where he achieved All-American honors in 1997.
  • Weaver played collegiate ball at Central State University.
